Making Splints for Rehab: Plaster House #Tanzania

The Plaster House is based in Arusha, Tanzania.

Our local partner provides operations for children from rural areas and then they recover in the homely environment of the 'Plaster House', where importance is placed on sound nutrition and care to aid the healing process.

Cases of club foot and cleft lip are common. As is skeletal fluorosis; a debilitating disease which buckles young bones and results from the high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in the Rift Valley. Many local children are also injured by open open fires used for cooking. Burns can result in contractures which restrict limb movement.

After Plastic Surgery to release burn scar contractures the children need splints to maintain the new position achieved with the surgery. In this photo our occupational therapist Jackie is making the splints.
