Day 40: Don't think about it
It is fairly common for swimmers in open water to get a bit freaked out by thoughts of what is or is not in the water. I think it is the fact when you are in open water you can't see much, and therefore your imagination starts to go in to overdrive. Monsters and sharks could be lurking beneath after all. Today I had a similar experience in the pool!
I was swimming towards the end of the pool which has a large mechanical roller that brings the cover in and out for the pool, and felt a large drip of water fell on the top of my head. In that moment I started to think about why that drip had hit me. I decided that maybe there was a problem with the structure and it was going to fall down on me and trap me at the bottom of the pool. Not good.
I had it all going round my head for about 5 minutes, and every time I got to that end of the pool I had to convince myself that I would be fine. The only way to get rid of my unwanted thoughts was to push harder and replace it with burning muscles. Interesting.
