A ballet of swans
As I've said several times before, for which apologies, I love the collective nouns for various birds. This one seems particularly apt although there seem to be a myriad of options for swans - perhaps reflecting the respect in which Swans are held by man.
Overnight the wind turned more to the West and became strong and as a consequence groups of Whooper Swans have appeared all over the place, stopping their migration to Iceland until the wind becomes more favourable. This blip was part of a group of about thirty at Balgarva on South Uist.
I loved the way their necks almost appear Medusa-like, wrapping around each other. The yellow on their beaks was picked out by the sun - good to have a day with bright sunshine again. That said we also had hail and rain....
