Scialytic: dispersing or dismissing shadows, typically with light, often of a lamp

I got an external flash (finally), which has the scialytic effect of softening and distributing the light, eliminating the gloomy shadows that often accompany the camera's flash. I had some time to experiment with it at our awards ceremony and end of quarter party today. Shown here is one of the students presented with an outstanding student certificate. Today was the last day of class, and finals start on Monday. Then, spring break, which is now two weeks long instead of one. I'm looking forward to a few days off.
