Spring Break!!!
Well it was decided last night that me and nizzy would go separate ways. I was an emotional wreck and after lots of tears, hugs and kisses we went in a different direction for the first time in 8 months!!! Then someone shouted SPRING BREAK and I forgot all about her. The actual goodbye was Alison stuffing her face with a baguette and couldn't kiss me as her mouth was full.lol.
Anyway I headed to Phonsovan with Alex my Venezuelan mate while Alison headed to Vang Vieng where I would meet her in 3 days time. We got a minivan that of course was absolutely rammed with people and took us about 8 hours to reach our destination. The first couple of guesthouse were full and then we found a golden gem. It was a twin room with two mattresses on the floor and the light didn't work so we got a further discount(£1.50 each for the night). The girl in charge of the place is really nice but the hostel/dump really isn't the best. I tried to have a shower before going for dinner but the water doesn't work.lol.
After I got changed we went to the MAG museum and watched a couple of documentaries on the secret war in Laos. MAG is an organisation set up to help the people of Laos clean up all the UXO (unexploded ordinance) left by the Americans during the Vietnam war. It's called the secret war as America had signed a treaty declaring they would not get involved with Laos. In the end they dropped so many bombs that Laos is the most bombed country per capita than anywhere else in the world!!! There was more bombs dropped on Laos than all the bombs dropped by all sides in the Second World War. They have a real problem as 30% of the bombs dropped did not explode and so still lie live in the ground killing and maiming people every year. It was a real eye opener as to how unfortunate the people here really are.
We walked across the street to eat with the locals in a small outdoor cafe. While we were eating kids were sneaking into the restaurant and stealing peoples left over food. I felt terrible eating such large portions while these kids are in such a sorry state, so I asked them over to eat the remainder of my dinner at the table, and within about 5 seconds they had cleared the plate. Horrible sight to see!!!
