A Mailbox in the Foothills

Communication
between individuals
is so important

My mailbox, so unlike this one, is a constant source of interest and pleasure for me. I watch for the mailman each day when I am at home. I've gotten to know the sound of the vehicle. I can hear it on the next street. Most days I can hope to get at least one postcard (postcrossing.com) from a stranger. Sometimes the mail is only a sales catalogue for a quilting store or art supply outlet. On special days, I might get a letter from a friend. Regardless, the postal service in the USA is most appreciated by me. Mail delivery is 6 days a week here. Mail is considered a service to the public.

When I return home, I cannot expect the same to hold true. Our Canada Post has decided to raise the cost of mailing a postcard internationally from $1.85 to $2.50. I've already written my letter of protest to the Prime Minister of Canada. I will have to re-think my involvement with postcrossing due to this ridiculous increase in cost. Perhaps the 4 hour drive to the American border once a month won't be so bad. It only costs $1.15 to mail a postcard internationally from the US side of the border. Canada Post has also decided to drop door to door mail delivery. Instead, they would have us use community mailboxes they set up on street corners. I can't see trusting my business or private mail to those. They are often broken into. Canada Post has long forgotten that mail delivery is a service to Canadians.
