Another day, another archaeological field trip
A better day - luckily as I was outside for four hours with the Archaeology Group on a field trip to South Uist. Howmore is a fascinating place with ruins of at least four chapels, all in close proximity, the oldest of which is thought to date back to Irish monks from the 7th century. With war graves from the Great War too, it is a reflective spot.
This blip is of the Clanranald burial chapel but the door that has been blocked up has sloping edges which indicates it too could be adapted from another building of the 7th century.
I love the textures of these old stones, covered in lichens and moss. I remember from years ago doing a project at school to test a theory that every species of lichen was another hundred years of history on a gravestone. Nice theory but not sure about its truth. All in all though a good trip.
And England won the rugby when I got back....
