Zoologists' Heaven!

Early in the morning, we traveled down the river a while, docked and made our way inland to a large lake, where by traditional boat we went in search of giant river otters, caimen, piranhas and wading birds. It was a great chance to kick back, relax, and just listen to the sounds of the birds and monkeys from the riverbanks. It started heating up, fast, but we still managed to spot all the fauna we came to see and more! We all tried our hand at piranha fishing, but Josh was the only one with success - he caught THREE! Needles to say, everyone else on board was suitably impressed!

On our way back to the river, our guide coaxed a tarantula out of his den so we could see how big they are in real life! It was awesome. We returned to the lodge to have a cold shower and relax a little before our next expedition to a small parakeet clay-lick, where we were lucky enough to witness dozens of Rainbow Macaws ingesting the clay. It has been suggested they do this to either neutralise toxins they ingest from other foods, or attain levels of sodium that they do get from their diets.

After lunch Damian and I decided to sit out of the afternoon trip and instead relaxed in the hammocks, reading our books and enjoying a cold beverage. Well after the sun had set, we embarked on a night walk to spot some of the more nocturnal inhabitants of the rainforest. We spotted a magnificent variety of frogs, spiders and even a baby boa!
