Girls' Day
Just 5 days before International Women's Day (which is March 8th), Japan celebrates Girls' Day, known as Hina Matsuri. There isn't much celebration but people display these fancy dolls for a couple weeks before and after March 3rd. The idea behind the day is to bring good luck for your daughter for marriage. It's said that if you wait too long to put away the dolls, your daughter will have bad luck.
I don't know why but since olden times Omura has celebrated this day in April, so people leave their dolls out for all of March.
I went to my coworker-friend's house for dinner last night and she had this out. I didn't know that people had such elaborate doll sets in their houses, it looked like it belonged in a museum.
