Staddle Stone

Not just a garden ornament, staddle stones were historically useful. They were used as props for farmers to build a platform on which to store grain, roots etc, the mushroom design prevented vermin from climbing on to the platform and eating the food. The design of the stalk varies from square to round depending on the region

They are much sort after in East Yorkshire it being primarily a grain producing area.

I was lucky enough to be able to buy a set of four at an agricultural sale in Driffield after coming to an agreement with an antique collector that he would bid for one set and I would bid for the other set, no one else seemed to be interested, so I reckon I got the bargain of the century!
