The Rose Window
Another trip to the dentist, another chance to catch a famous York landmark this time the incomparable cathedral.
The Rose Window which was nearly destroyed by fire after a lighting strike in 1984 is now completely restored. It contains 73 panels with over 7,000 pieces of stained glass.
The window is the feature of the South Transcept and forms part of the 13th century cathedral. The original glass was plain and the stained glass was installed to honour the Tudor dynasty after the Wars of the Roses.
The cathedral, which is the largest in Northern Europe is York's most popular tourist attraction. It is always undergoing some repairs and legend has it that when all the scaffolding is removed it with become Roman Catholic once again!
