Give us a go!

After one of our 'visitors' suggested yesterday that our outdoor building site and woodwork area could be dangerous I left work feeling frustrated, having been too exhausted to convince them of the importance of risk for young children:

Children have a greater ability to manage risks than adults often anticipate, and to increase adults’ confidence in children’s ability they should engage with them in a way that is meaningful to the children. Adults must be conscious and wary of children’s risk-taking, but also appreciate their ability to handle their own risks through careful assessment (Christensen and Mikkelsen).
We should take a lead from other countries, such as the Netherlands and Scandinavia, which offer environments that meet children’s needs through challenging play opportunities and more relaxed attitudes towards risk.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest!
Two more days and it's the weekend, I'll sleep well tonight...
