Long forgotten
I had another little adventure today at work, instead of going up I went in the opposite direction. I suppose this photo without an explanation is not especially pleasing in fact it is hard to convey the feeling of being in a man made cave in this image. This is the remnants of what was once David's Tower, at one time an imposing structure which was destroyed in the Lang Siege at Edinburgh Castle. In the years that followed what remained of David's Tower was forgotten until the early 20th Century when rubble was removed from the area and the old medieval fortifications were discovered. In the area where the photo was taken you must descend a high spiral staircase which leads you down to what was once the entrance to David's Tower. It is blocked in on one side by the half moon battery that was built after the Lang Siege and covered on the other side by the raised level of Crown Square which would be many meters above my head. The remnants of David's Tower also happens to be where the Crown, Sword and Sceptre of Scotland were hidden during WWII, the crown being squirrelled away down a medieval toilet! It was so cave-like down there that stalactites grow from the ceiling. It was amazing to think how different the castle was 500 years ago.
