Viaduct over the River South Esk at Montrose

This viaduct which is also the railway bridge for trains from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Aberdeen was original under construction in 1880 by the same engineer Sir Thomas Bouch, who was also the the head of construction for the building of the Tay Bridge. (The Tay Bridge was destroyed in a great storm on the 28th December 1879). Bouch died a broken man on 1st November 1880, and the on the 12th May 1881 the Directors of the North British Railway Company agreed contracts for the erection of a replacement viaduct to be built at Montrose. The contractor was to be Sir William Arrol who was also to be responsible for the building of the railway bridge over the River Forth and the new Tay Bridge.

I am happy to say I've travelled from Montrose southwards across that viaduct and am still living!
