Hazelhead heritage item in a Cairn

So the sun arrived this afternoon, if somewhat chilly in the wind.

Again running out of day (again) I did a visit to Hazelhead Park. The park has a significant collection of sculpture by a range of artists and heritage items that have been rescued from various places within the city. My picture is of a stone depicting Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

This park of over 180 hectares was was originally part of the freedom lands granted to the city in 1319 by King Robert the Bruce on 10th December, 1319, which was made up of the whole of Stocket Forest to the Burgesses of Aberdeen. For the payment of a yearly feuduty of £213.6.8 Scots (£17 sterling) and reserving for himself and his heirs only "the green growth of the great trees and the game."

The land (that is now Hazelhead park) fell into private ownership but was bought back by the City council in 1920. This park is on the outskirts of Aberdeen and is heavily wooded. It is popular with sports enthusiasts, walkers, naturalists and picnickers.

Around the park are football pitches, a golf course, pitch and putt course and woods for walking. The park itself has rose gardens, azalea & rhododendron borders, heather beds, a children's play area.
