Derry Hill

The Lansdowne Arms, at the top of Old Derry Hill, not only overlooks the Pewsham plains that stretch out towards Chippenham, as seen here, but also lies opposite the Golden Gate entrance to Bowood, which is also a public footpath.

I had gone through the gates, intending to take a winter blip for the Bowood 2014 series, and took a few landscape pictures of the golf course. I also crossed the main road to another footpath where I found a big bunch of wild snowdrops growing and photographed them as a prospective blip. I have done this a few times now in various places, but there is always another picture that has taken precedence over the snowdrops.

Reviewing the pictures it became clear that this view was to be the blip. However, although I think the pub may well be owned by Lord Shelburne and is named after one of his ancestors, it isn't strictly part of the Bowood estate and so can't form part of that series.

The Animals - We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (1965)
A CD collection called The Songs Of Mann & Weil arrived in the post on this day. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote a large number of sixties classics, including a number of Phil Spector productions for the Ronettes, Crystals and Righteous Brothers.
This British hit for the Animals wasn't included so is here instead. It was written originally as a follow-up to their You've Lost That Loving Feeling for the Righteous Brothers, and then for Barry Mann to record himself when he signed as an artist to Red Bird, but his demo was sent to Mickie Most in England, and he recorded it with the Animals and released it first.
