Butterfly who looks like he/she's been in the wars

I took a few photos of this fellow. Some with my Nikon (till the battery ran out!) And some with my phone. In the end chose the shot from my phone as it's easier to upload! Didn't notice until after I'd taken the shots that this chap/lady's wings are looking a bit the worse for wear. Wonder if he/she's been in a fight or just coming to the end of life. I'm not sure how long they live? One day or longer?
