The Devil!!!!

Anyone know what this is, and where/which country it may have originated from? We found this in mother-in-laws loft when we had to clear her house a few years back. The casting is bronze and has a glass container on top. You may not be able to see it clearly but there is a small bucket shaped pot also cast into the base in the bronze. We would welcome any ideas at all.
As you will have guessed it is still raining hard here and had to look for indoor blips!!!! Maybe tomorrow I will be able to get OUTDOORS!
