A little bit of kampong life ...

and a little bit of coffee shop life.

Kampongs are villages. There's only one left in Singapore now, and this isn't it. But the chickens running around reminded me of that vanishing slice of life. I was amazed to see the chickens, most were culled when there was a bird flu scare 10 years ago, and I think there may still be some restrictions on the rearing of chickens.

When we talk of coffee shops, we don't mean Starbucks or Costa (though we now have both), we mean these shops where there are a few different food stalls, and always one drinks stall. Good cheap food, good cheap drinks, and those that open into the night will also sell good cheap beer, S$5 for a large bottle of Tiger.
