Old-man's-beard
Wild clematis or old-man's-beard is such a feature of the hedgerows and scrubby areas at this time of year. I prefer one of its other common names that describes its sheer exuberance better - Traveller's-joy. No wonder it made such an impression on that great poet and traveller on foot through the English countryside, Edward Thomas:
Rough, long grasses keep white with frost
At the hill-top by the finger-post;
The smoke of the traveller's-joy is puffed
Over hawthorn berry and hazel tuft.
I read the sign. Which way shall I go?
