Vision

Seeing with her hands,
She bequeaths us her vision,
Coaxed from cold grey stone.

Went on a photography meetup at Highgate cemetery in London (who's most famous resident is Karl Marx of course). As anyone who has followed my journal will know, I do love a good graveyard!

Three hours of wandering, clambering, thinking and taking photo's in such an evocative place = heaven.

This statue marks the grave of Anna Mahler (yes that Mahler), who was a wonderful sculptor. The status is a copy of a sculpture by her called "Vision". It is so heart-achingly beautiful, I kept being drawn back to it. Such a moving stillness about it, so much more potent than all the grand Victorian crosses and angels ... although they were rather wonderful as well. Anna led an interesting life, and produced some truly great sculptures .. more about her here

Marx's grave was the hotspot for visitors who seemed to go straight there and have their photos taken with the great man - how bizarre would he have found it all!
