The Kelpies

I’ve been unusually silent for a few days without intending to be. We set off for points north, having diversions to see old friends and a bit of business in Edinburgh, and arrived in Oban Thursday night. There was no phone line and no internet in the house! Apparently lightning storms 3 weeks ago left a lot of people waiting for lines to be fixed, and the one we use wasn’t on the list to be fixed till Wednesday. But a kind and lovely BT engineer turned up this afternoon in the passing (!) rain and got us online again. Yay for BT.

We came a different route as we’d been to Edinburgh, and saw these amazing horses head sculptures from the motorway near Falkirk. They are called the Kelpies, created by Andy Scott and stand an amazing 30 metres above the Forth and Clyde Canal. It has been an 8 year project to make these monuments to horse powered heritage across Central Scotland. They are a landmark feature in the Helix Environmental Rengeneration Scheme on the canal and the largest public work of art in Scotland.

The Kelpie is a mystical shape-shifting waterhorse from Celtic folklore.
