Franklin, Alabama

This is downtown Franklin, the place that doesn't seem to appear on any online map which makes finding it interesting. Although there is a Franklin area that is shown, just not a town.

Anyway, we came up last night to stay with my brother in law and his 'new' house, a wonderful 100 year old farmhouse that was largely original (apart from the newish windows). But it was much cooler than we were expecting so we practically froze in the house. There was no real heating yet, and as much faith you can have in (several) 1500W heaters, there is only so much they can do in an old house that just doesn't want to warm up. Heated blankets saved the day - or night as it was.

In the morning had a drive round the area which was nice. Who knew there were rolling hills this close (100 miles) to the coast?

Franklin is just north of the Mobile Delta which is famous for the amount of water that runs through it - I think someone said it brings 5 major rivers together. We were close to the Alabama River (iirc) which even 100 miles inland was pretty big - and was probably running 10feet deeper than normal with the amount of water coming through it. Quite impressive.

The church is obviously restored - but look along the line of the windows - not a straight line there! All I can think is that the wood was so rough when they built the church, finding a straight line was near on impossible. And I doubt a church built so far in the country with such a small community had the best resources to get the best cut wood either.

In the small white picket fenced off area were the original church, original school house (which was tiny), and the original general store/trading post. All restored and owned by a local wealthy land owning family.

What bugged me was that I didn't bother bringing a proper camera with me - and then relied on my mobile phone camera - which promptly died. Won't make that mistake again.
