Worse things happen at sea

The day started well enough. We left Cape Town and eventually found the back road that was going to take us the pretty way along the coast towards where we are staying the night. A beautiful drive it turned out to be, with spectacular views, as the road skirted the headland and we drove between the mountains and the sea. A glorious day of blue skies and blue seas and sunshine. South Africa at its best.

Then it all turned a bit sour. We stopped for lunch at Hermanus, which at the right season is well known for whale watching. As we sat, Gordon’s bag was stolen. It was there and then it wasn’t. Of course we were shocked, upset, worried, and annoyed with ourselves for not being as careful as might have been.

However, it could have been a lot worse. There was not a lot of great value in the bag and he needed a new phone anyway. We had an interesting experience at the Police Station trying to wrench a crime number from them for insurance purposes.

Not a nice experience, but as we eventually got on our way, we decided that the incident should in no way spoil our holiday, nor will it put us off coming here again. It could have happened anywhere and we have learnt from it. We are now at Arniston, in a lovely hotel overlooking the sea. It is sunny, but now very windy and the waves are spectacular, hence the picture. Arniston was named after the ship The Arniston, which shipwrecked here in 1815 with a huge loss of life - 372 people perished on that day. More details here - eventually!

So . . . worse things happen at sea.
