African Penguins

Today we set off on one of our favourite trips - the Southern Peninsula and Cape Point. We have done this before but it never fails to impress. From Hout Bay we took the Chapman’s Peak Drive across the mountains - scary indeed, but fabulous views of mountains and blue seas. Once over we made our way south into the National Park. Then it’s a drive to the southern tip of Cape Point, avoiding baboons on the way. We had lunch at the Two Oceans Restaurant, then a walk up to the lighthouse (well one of us got to the top and one of us didn’t!). We then made our way down to the Cape of Good Hope, avoiding the crowds of people queuing to have their photo taken against the sign. The coast here is wild and beautiful, with white sand and the blue sea sparkling in the sunshine. We came across ostriches wandering by the sea.

Then we headed north again to Simon’s Town and had the obligatory stop at Boulders Beach to see the African Penguins. They made this their home a long time ago and there are now nearly three thousand of them. Walkways make it easy for visitors to watch them, as they congregate on the beach and swim in the sea, ignoring all the tourists snapping away from the viewing platforms.

We leave Cape Town tomorrow.
