Holocaust Memorial Day

The say, of course, that familiarity breeds contempt.

I'm not sure that's true.

But familiarity with a person or a place can result in you losing sight of how special they are, in you taking them for granted. We forget just how incredible we thought they were in the early days of our acquaintanceships.

Like my friend, Ash. I've known him for more than half my life and I think he's a lovely man. But I'm used to him being there, being my friend. And then I see him play guitar and I'm bowled over once again by how talented he is. I forget just how amazing he is.

And for all the things I love about the Minx, despite how much I enjoy being with her, I'm still amazed when I see a drawing she's done, I'm repeatedly astounded by the ideas that she has.

Sometimes, I take Kirkby Lonsdale for granted, too. I know it's a great place to live, I enjoy living here. But I'm familiar with it. Then, this evening, I went to pick up Dan from Scouts and I saw the flag of Israel flying for Holocaust Memorial Day and I was proud to live in this town.
