Neighbour problems

Today we had our shared meal at a friend's house in the middle of the peach orchards. The English couple have lived there for twenty years but are still resented by their farmer neighbour. It is one of those all too common French inheritance stories where properties are divided among siblings when inherited. In this case, one brother wanted to sell and the other brother could not prevent him. Our friends bought half the property but the brother who remained always resented them, to such a degree that he had this sign made for the farm gate next to their property. If you go large you can read the words, "Farm - St Joan of Arc burned by the English in 1431." Other neighbours were scandalised when the sign was put up but as the brother had a reputation for mischief and aggression, our friends were advised not to start a neighbour war.
