Flight of the heron ...

There is a heronry in the tall trees at the entrance to Kilmun Arboretum. Until I walked there at this time of year in the first year of my retirement, I didn't know it was there. I didn't know herons roosted in trees, for heaven's sake, and I still can't see how it ...works. I also didn't know how noisy they were - I'd only ever seen them standing stock still and silent at the edge of water. This one, closely followed by another, glided over our heads today as I was taking another photo, and though it's far off and I didn't have time to focus properly, I love it.

They were very raucous when they met up, by the way ...
