The Master of Gravity
Jonny Greenwood - Baton Sparks
Today, I saw to fantastic films. The Master by Paul Thomas Anderson and Gravity by Alfonso Cuaron. Both films were gripping, with incredible performances, laced with an amazing soundtrack.
The Master was beautifully shot in 70mm which brought to life an incredible atmosphere. There were scenes involving some photography and 1950s photography always fascinates me. I marvel at the photos of my grandparents in tight studio conditions, and despite not having the incredible equipment we have today, photographers had to make use of studied knowledge or experience. I also enjoyed the film for its aspects on perspective as well as Joaquin Phoenix's excellent performance. Challenging to say the least but it was a moving experience as a whole. I loved There Will Be Blood, Punch Drunk Love and of course, Boogie Nights. Magnolia was very full-on for me but there's a lot of positives for it and acclaim worthy of bearing in my opinion.
Gravity was perhaps the best disaster film I've seen. So simplistic, tense, beautiful and exciting. The technical aspects were superb but it was still incredibly human and realistic. I have no idea about space travel, but it was very easy to understand because it had such an emotional draw. By the end my hairs were standing on end and I have nothing but respect for space travelers and all those involved. I haven't seen all of Alfonso Cuaron's films, but Children of Men and Y Tu Mama Tambien were fantastic. Harry Potter 3 was pretty cool cinematically but I suppose I'm getting too snobby to enjoy Harry Potter, or The Hunger Games and (gasp!) Twilight.
Loved the soundtrack also.
Steven Price - Debris
A workout at the gym, some study and general relaxation were all part and parcel of the day also.
