Bamboo Barajas

Spent a couple of hours in Madrid Barajas Airport today on the way back from a work trip. Designed by Richard Rogers and Estudio Lamela, the current airport buildings opened in 2009.

I love the green architecture theme and pleasing aesthetics. All the soaring ceilings are artistically lined with bamboo. The eco-friendly lighting comprises modestly sized up-lighters with big circular reflectors above them to maximise the spread of light. It is more colourful than most airports too, with a palette of shades in increasing intensity as you walk to your gate. In common with most other airports, it's a long walk!
