Guess the Sport

I'm afraid I'm short of time again so grabbing a small window to post this and see who can guess the sport being watched here. Name in lights tomorrow for the first person to get it right. And I'm demanding accuracy!

The sport is Crown Green Bowling. I managed to escape for a run along the canal at lunchtime and spotted all this activity at the bowling club. There was a great deal of enthusiasm and no shortage of people to answer my questions. What I didn't know before today is that Crown Green Bowls is the working man's poor relation to Lawn Bowls. The gentry could afford to have their playing area precisely levelled and manicured, but when the workers in the mills wanted to play themselves they had to make do with any old patch of grass they could get hold of, usually with all sorts of undulations. They created a slightly different sport to fit the more variable and interesting playing conditions. I was told it's similar in a way to how Rugby League evolved from Rugby Union. Now you know.
