Cut off

Today was forecast to be a fine break in the awful weather we have been having and apparently will continue to have for the next few days. We set off to visit the Nature Reserve on Walney Island, Barrow, to watch seabirds. We crossed over to Walney and proceeded along the narrow coast road to South Walney. We did notice that there it was high tide, as the sea in places was almost level with the road. However, we did not expect to be suddenly stopped when we turned a corner and found the road ahead engulfed by the sea!

Not prepared to wait for the turn of the tide, we managed to gingerly turn the car round and head back the way we had come. At Barrow, we decided to take the coast road to return to Ulverston. We wandered along, stopping at a few places by the sea, before we eventually reached Bardsea. This is a little coastal town close to Ulverston. Before the coming of the railways, it was an important port for the Furness Peninsula, sending iron ore by sea to Fleetwood and Liverpool. We had a lovely walk along the foreshore and then up on the old seawall. It was a beautiful sunny day and there were some fine views across Morecambe Bay. This is looking out to sea across the bay, with the tide now well out! Back to the wind and rain tomorrow, I fear.
