Bridge Works

We went to visit Marie's parents today, and on the way there passed through the village of Cleland, in North Lanarkshire.

The north east corner of the village is bounded by the Cleland Railway Viaduct, which carries the "Shotts Line" between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Some significant work on the viaduct is coming to an end, but the scaffolding still remains.

Unfortunately it is hard to get a good view of the bridge, and this one does not show the arches - it must have ten or more spans - but the sheer amount of scaffolding used here for maintenance really does make you wonder how the original bridge must have been built, given that modern scaffolding techniques were not available to the labourers of the time.
