Between Wareham and Corfe: The Halfway Inn.

In the distance, visible between the Inn and the tree, is the hill called Creech Barrow. It is the highest point in East Dorset, but for all that not particularly high; moreover its top is slowly subsiding (from the 634 ft recorded in 1970) as a result of the clay mining carried out beneath it until about the 1970s.

It was a delightful Saturday in February. I had recently acquired my first digital camera, and took it on a walk along the main road from Wareham to Corfe Castle. It became very clear that walkers on this road face a difficult and at times even dangerous task: for much of the way there is either a narrow strip of verge or none at all.

This photo of the Halfway Inn, a pub/restaurant which is roughly midway between the two towns. The lower sign reads "Special Menu for Valentine's Night - book now." (St Valentine's Day is the 14th February.)
