Then the Pilot Light Went Out

9.2C wet and windy. Wind at 20 to 30 mph gusting over 40.

Last night, after such a gorgeous day, the wind and rain came. At midnight Maeve the Deerhound and I went out for her last walk. We got soaked in horizontal rain. There was much towelling of the Maeve. By 1am the wind was gusting at 54 mph. By 1.30am we had a power cut. We think the power came back on about 2 hours later.

When my alarm went off this morning I figured out that the heating hadn't come on. I went downstairs to check the boiler. The timer was at the right time and the pump was running. The boiler wasn't. The pilot light had gone out. This is a rare event (fortunately) which is more prone to happen with strong winds from certain directions. Since the boiler isn't new there is a bit of a rigmarole to get the pilot light going and even then there has to be a leap of faith to start the burners. Second time round the rigmarole it lit. Much relief.

After breakfast we went to M&S at City Quay in Dundee to begin the restoration of the normal routine. When we came home the rain was off enough to walk Maeve. Down at the beach everything looked very very soggy. The wind and squally showers continue ...
