FREEZIN' SEASON

Interesting that birds’ bare feet can spend day and night gripping ice covered limbs, but not freeze. Interesting that these tiny creatures can maintain enough warmth in this horrible weather just by puffing up their feathers. Guess that’s why down comforters and coats are so warm! This Dark-eyed Junco seems to be doing just fine.

There are still thousands of people who don’t have power in this area, going on five days now. An amazing thing is happening since most of the traffic lights are out – drivers are being so patient and thoughtful. Even at the major intersections only the first car (or two, if double lanes, etc.) crosses the intersection, then the drivers from the other direction take their turn. They even all wait for someone turning left across traffic to take their turn. It goes off like a well-choreographed dance, and there are no police officers or traffic directors to keep things running smoothly. This is the capitol city of Michigan, so it’s a fair sized city. I’m just surprised and pleased to see that tempers aren’t flaring and ‘road rage’ isn’t rearing it’s ugly head.
