Plunge
I guess it has been tiring, these last few days. I overslept.
Much of the day was spent doing things I'm not greatly fond of, but have no choice but to do. Here, the light dies at about 6, and despite the traffic, we decided to head off towards the Ganges. To me, that was where my day happened. We passed through unimaginably thin lanes, and houses in states of complete disrepair.
As we stood by the steps watching ferries come and go, loads of people rushing through the bridge along the jetty, few children swimming in the murky river water, bathers, onlookers and so on, evening descended. The Ganges is a sacred river meant to cleanse the people, even if we decide to dump all kinds of toxic waste into its waters. Apparently, it is a host to antibiotic-resistant germs too! It looked ominous. Which of course didn't stop people from using it to wash their clothes, collect water in little bottles and even bathe in it. Rather unabashedly too.
I liked the way the dusk came and left and street lights began to cast their yellow glow upon the steps. Smoky ferries continued to roll by. Huge chimneys from industrial plants lining the shore on the other side emitted smoke too, and plants floated by. A few curious kids were eager to get their photo taken, but by then it was already evening. To stand still and observe a sea of movement. It was the best part of my day despite not getting good shots.
