Penultimate day

We decided to take Mum out today, and if she was good we would bring her back!!! There is a town about an hour and a half drive away called Calasparra, it is well known for its rice, makes great risottos. It is one of the few varieties of rice that has a DO. Near to the town is a Religious Sanctuary called 'De Sanctuario del Virgen de Esperanza'. It is a church hewn out of the rock face and is incredibly tranquil. The building was consecrated in 1892. I've not managed to find out the full history but I think the Virgen has healing powers, as there is a room behind the statue full of wedding dresses, christening gowns, commuion clothes and small wax limbs (arms, legs, heads) all with letters attached asking for prayers to be said in order to help those that are ill and aid their recovery.

There are several fiestas where they parade the Virgen and depending upon the religious calendar (Easter, Christmas etc) determines which outfit she wears.

The Church is built from the stones and rocks taken from the mountain and must have been a labour of love over many years. We have been several times and each time we go they have upgraded the roads, pathways and gardens as they depend on donations for the running of the Sanctuary.

In the photo of the bee, I've not seen one this size or colour, his wings were an iridescent blue, the cotoneaster bushes where truly magnificent full of bright orange berries.
