Biomass

Driving up the M74 a couple of weeks ago, I was struck by the dramatic sight of this plant illuminated after dark. I returned this evening to photograph it.

It is Steven's Croft Biomass Power Station just outside Lockerbie, the largest biomass plant in the UK. It burns various renewable wood based fuels including forest wood and agricultural residues, urban wastes and energy crops, all of which are readily available nearby.

Whilst setting up my tripod and camera at the roadside for one shot, a police car drew to a halt beside me. A brief vision of being arrested for breaching national security by photographing strategic assets soon disappeared in a friendly chat about photography and what a dramatic building it was by night. "As long as you're ok sir" they said. "Please don't get run over, as that means a lot of paperwork, and we don't want that, do we now."
