The Chapel of St Albert the Great

This exquisite little building by Simpson & Brown is my current favourite. It is tucked behind the west side of Edinburgh's George Square, facing Middle Meadow Walk.

Supported on tree-like structures of Corten Steel, the roof floats above the massive walls, seperated from them by a modern interpretation of the clerestory. Creatively, the walls are punctured by angled windows, giving glimpses into the interior as you approach from the garden, and, conversely, affording glimpses of the garden from the darkened interior.

I have visited by day and after dark, as it is at dusk that it takes on a new life. It is beautiful. Go and see it. Access from Middle Meadow Walk.
