At home with Callum

Yesterday was all about Reuben, so today, Callum and I were playing with one of his birthday presents, a Batman memory game. The cards were set in a grid of cardboard that we popped out. The grid trash went into the recycling but a moment later I thought, hey, they look like mullioned and transomed windows. I wonder if we could make a little Christmas house?

And so we did. And 5 hours later of retrieving boxes and scraps of trash, cutting, painting and glittering, we'd made this.

I will add that Callum's and my minds were on a roll. Callum made a windshield which apparently should go on the roof though it later became the fireplace in the bedroom after he found a little piece of wood in the garden.

In the midst came the news of Nelson Mandela's passing. We stopped to listen to the news and we talked about the he was. In the 90s, I'd attended the Free Nelson Mandela concerts at Wembley and later, the celebratory concert to which Nelson Mandela attended after his release from prison. I feel extremely fortunate to have been there, to have been part of the movement for his release, to be part of the celebration upon his release. I'd been studying apartheid in South Africa as part of my final year studies at university. What an extraordinary impact he has had on the World, on values, on courage and living. It's utterly humbling to envisage.
