Slick Sidewalks and Streets
The streets and walks in our neighborhood are very slippery. You can see the icy patches on this street. I could talk about the falls resulting in wrist and hip injuries, but that's much too depressing. A more cheerful topic is Christmas lights.
Thought the streets are icy, it is worth a drive-by to look at Christmas lights. There is an area of a few blocks in Edmonton called Candy Cane Lane. Candy Cane lane was started over 40 years ago by a small group of residents in Crestwood Community. As with most things it started off small with a few houses putting up some impressive light displays. The spirit spread to other residents up and down 148 street from 100 avenue to 92 avenue where today more that 10 city blocks are now officially considered being on the lane. It is all done on a volunteer basis and there is no commercial or municipal sponsorship of any kind. Over the past few seasons another group of residents on the lane thought that with so many visitors coming to enjoy the sights it might be an idea to give the visitors an opportunity to show their Christmas spirit and ask them to bring non perishable food items to drop off for the Edmonton Food Bank. This has proven to be a raging success and tens of thousands of pounds of food is collected for this worthy cause .
Our little city is doing something similar. This is a photo taken of one home on a small cul-de-sac where all the homes are decorated. There is a food bank collection container for anyone to donate to our local food bank.
