Canal

At the junction of Canal Road and Holdsworth Street, a typical Grade II listed Bradford warehouse.

Having finally picked up my new glasses, I can perhaps begin to appreciate the architectural details:

" Circa 1870-74 intact warehouse and office block closely related to the design of Nos 16 and 18 and also by Milnes and France. Four storey, ashlar front to Mill Street. Rusticated quoin pilasters to ground floor. Coupled segmental headed windows, but without the foliate bands of Nos 16 and 18. Paired doorways to centre in linked rusticated, chamfered surrounds with impost mouldings and keystones - double panelled doors and semi-circular fanlights. Cornice across as first floor sill course, sill bands to upper floors; large block brackets to bold eaves cornice. Paired outer windows to upper floors, flat arches first and second floors, segmental arches to third floor with projecting heads. The warehouse block retains its full depth, linking up in one long range with No 29 Canal Road. The long, plain side elevations have continuous sill bands to 35 windows on each floor, including superimposed hatches at 3 points. Block brackets to eaves. Blocked semi-circular archway with ashlar voussoirs stepped to keystone near to Canal Road end on Holdsworth Street elevation. The elevation of No 29 Canal Road is ashlar faced with bevelled corner to Holdsworth Road. Cornice over ground floor as first floor sill course and sill bands to 3 upper floors carried across grooved quoin pilasters and the rusticated bevelled corner. Two slight breaks in the 7 window front; outer windows coupled, single ones to breaks and 3 grouped to centre. Grooved rustication to ground floor, the breaks contain round headed doorways, the rustication struck into the arches. The first floor windows in breaks are emphasised by panelled flanking strips and carved consoles to cornices over, plain cornices to those on second floor and eared architraves to third floor - other windows plain. Stone bracket eaves cornice and broad bracket corniced chimney above bevelled corner."
