Volcano landscape

This is typical landscape as you travel around Lanzarote. These volcanoes in the background form part of the Timanfaya National Park. It was formed over 6 years of volcanic activity in the 1730's, with the formation of new cones as well as older ones erupting, making it one of the newest areas on Earth. It's an incredible place with only the beginnings of plant life today. Palm trees are usually only found in built up areas, which is why this scene was a bit different. Try it in large to see more detail.

The whole island is covered in dark remains of lava. But there is a large area which is becoming known as a wine growing region. Each individual vine has to be protected by one of these traditional horse shoe shaped walls and dug into a scooped out hole, which can bee seen nearest the camera. Wine is already on sale but the water problem is acute.
