Bridges
Ange and I travelled to York and back today to the funeral of our friend's mum. Here we are passing through Newcastle, this blip is taken on the move through the train window. Here are some of the famous bridges in Newcastle; the Tyne Bridge which I have run over during the Great North Run, the High Level bridge and the Queen Elizabeth II metro Bridge.
Bridges are interesting things, spanning physical obstacles providing passage across an obstacle. Bridges may be classified by how the forces of tension, compression, bending, torsion and shear are distributed through their structure. Most bridges are fixed bridges, meaning they have no moving parts and stay in one place until they fail or are demolished. Temporary bridges are designed to be assembled, and taken apart, transported to a different site, and re-used.
Not all bridges span physical obstacles. Some of us spend lots of time building bridges only for others to demolish them!
For me bridges also represent transitions from one place to another...physical and psychological!!
