Sunken Lane

After a morning installing some new fencing at my Mum's, an activity that saw us accidentally excavating two toads that were overwintering in the earth, my eldest brother and I headed up on to the Denbigh Moors to the Wildlife Trust reserve Gors Maen Llwyd, on the shores of Llyn Brenig.

The story of the historical enclosure and expropriation of Welsh water for English cities played a key part in the development of Welsh nationalism, and is still the source of cultural and economic debate today. Llyn Brenig was opened in 1976, ten years after the more controversial flooding of Capel Celyn. Brenig was in a less populated area, although as this image shows, the flooding of the valley did have an impact on what lay there before.

An abandoned metalled road, disappearing under the water and reappearing on the other side, remains a poignant site.
