Windows

House I'm working on has old windows. Can't really afford to get them replaced straight away so gonna give them a going over to give them a couple more years.

I know nothing about windows but am learning fast. These original windows are beginning to rot in the corners and the paint just falls off when you look at it. But it's becoming obvious the reason the windows are in such bad shape is because the window putty has long since failed. The good windows have been shielded from the weather, the bad windows have take it head on.

What you see here is the window putty just falling out. Essentially moisture has got behind the putty and weakened the wood. Worse still, the putty then protects the water from evaporating.

It is really difficult right now to stop pulling all the putty out - because if you do the pane of glass is simply gonna fall right out. So this was kinda "exploratory" digging out the old putty until I'm ready to do them properly. Leave just enough putty to keep the glass in. Asked the guy at Lowes where I could find window putty and he looked at me like I had two heads.

Have a nasty feeling I have 2-3 days of work on these windows.

And just my luck that the temps in Florida have dropped right down at the moment. This is gonna be cold.
