TWILIGHT YEARS FOR THIS SWEET CHESTNUT

I am going to keep an eye on this old chestnut while I am coppicing nearby. It is barely alive, but potentially it has plenty still to say.

Surely I can expect to see Green Woodpeckers emerging from that hole one day soon?

And, ...maybe that twisting growth habit will draw me into marking the dead spiral with my chainsaw (while leaving the living bark unscathed)?

Who knows at this stage?
