Mayfly bonanza

I went back to my friend's house this evening to see if there were any more of these critters about. Last time I blipped one I didn't know what it was but a number of you felt it was probably a mayfly without its tail. Today I found more and they have got their triple tails so I guess that's a conclusive identification - look closer if you need convincing.

I was fascinated when I was looking at the photos on the computer to see that some have red 'eyes' and some have brown ones - then I realised that from below we see brown but from above the top is red and the side is brown. Weird! It's almost like they have four eyes. I know nothing about mayflys at all - in fact I didn't even know we had them in New Zealand - so I could be totally wrong of course.
