Regeneration

I'm not sure exactly what this is (it could be some form of seed pod???) but I picked up off the beach in March when we were in Jamaica. It's approx 6 inches long and roughly 3 inches at it's widest part. Although it was soaking wet and black when I picked it up, it's now fully dried out and light in colour and weight.

Any ideas?
